Practicing Good Trampoline Safety
Trampolines can be fun for kids and adults but practicing good trampoline safety is imperative in order to keep the fun from turning into a serious injury. Although trampolines can be very safe when used properly, there are almost 100,000 injuries a year on home trampolines and out of those, 2/3 happen to children between the ages of 6 and 14.

Injuries can happen for several reasons, landing wrong or on the springs or frame, hitting another person by mistake, falling off or attempting stunts are some ways that people can get hurt. Common injuries range from cuts and scrapes to broken bones.

Good trampoline safety starts with the trampoline itself. First of all, you must get a trampoline enclosure or safety net. There are a couple of different kinds of enclosures and you want to get one that protects you from landing on the hard frame edges of the trampoline as well as from falling off. Also, be sure to put the trampoline on grass as opposed to a hard surface like a patio (just in case) and be sure you keep objects like bicycles and other toys away from the trampoline.

It makes sense that the safest part of the trampoline is in the exact center and for that reason many trampolines have something to mark that area. You want to instruct your child to always jump in the center of the trampoline and never out near the edges. Also, be sure only one child at a time is jumping - a serious injury can occur when two kids collide in mid jump!

You might also consider getting a cover for your trampoline. This will prevent debris and dirt from getting onto the trampoline. Anything that is on the surface could potentially cause you to slip and loose your footing or if something sharp like a twig makes it’s way onto there it could really smart when landing on it after a big jump.

It’s always best to supervise your children when they are playing on the trampoline. Sometimes the sheer joy of jumping and playing in the open air can cause kids to become careless and it is up to you to be sure they play with safety in mind.

If you have a trampoline at your home or your kids play at one at a neighbors house, it is your responsibility to make sure that good trampoline safety is the first priority. Be sure to check the apparatus your kids will be jumping on yourself to be sure it meets your requirements and never let them use it without parental supervision.
