Nowadays while driving down the street it is not uncommon to see a trampoline in the yard of many homes. While this fun playtime sport seems to have flourished in recent years, the invention of the trampoline dates back to the 1930’s when inventor George Nissen came up with the idea after watching trapeze artists bounce up and perform stylish summersaults after dropping into the safety netting.
This apparatus was first used by the Air Force and Space Agencies to train astronauts and was called one of the most efficient exercise devices ever made by NASA. In fact, the trampoline is not only a fun sport and has been part of the Olympics since 2000, but it is also a great way to exercise for athletes as well as anyone who is health conscious.
While we often associate trampolines with children it is really an apparatus that anyone can enjoy using. Typically the large back yard trampolines are fun for kids to jump around on, but adults who want a great health giving exercise can use those or the smaller mini trampolines or rebounders.
The mini trampolines are about 3 feet across and just around 9 inches off the ground and can be used for a variety of zero impact exercises. They offer a great aerobic workout with the same benefits of jogging but without the strain and impact to your bones and joints. In fact, rebounding on the trampoline can have more health benefits than any other exercise. Along with increased lung capacity, normalized blood pressure, stress reduction and better oxygenated blood, the unique action of rebounding also stimulates the lymphatic system to work more efficiently thus ridding your body of toxins and boosting your immune system.
Another benefit of the smaller trampolines is that anyone, even the elderly or those that don’t exercise at all, can get on them and bounce for a bit of exercise. You can use them for as little or as much of a workout as you want.
A recent addition to trampoline fun is the water trampoline which, as you might have guessed, is a giant trampoline that is anchored in a body of water - typically a lake or pond. This trampoline has the added bonus of allowing the jump to land in the water for extra fun!
If you are thinking about buying a trampoline, you want to be sure to check out all the safety features first and make sure you get an enclosure so that you and your kids are safe from falling off. Be sure to buy a high quality product that won’t fall apart easily and you practice good trampoline safety to reduce risk of injury. And most of all - have fun!
